Working for: North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (“NEROCU”)
The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit is one of ten Regional Organised Crime Units (“ROCU”) in England and Wales who lead the regional response to tackling serious and organised crime whilst supporting local and national delivery. The Home Office funding through police officer uplift and increased police staff capacity presents exciting opportunities to further enhance service delivery and positively impact on our partners and the public. The Home Office Serious and Organised Crime Strategy defines ROCU as leading the regional fight against Serious and Organised Crime and NEROCU have a critical role in leading, connecting and co‑ordinating delivery across our region in all four P’s of the strategy; Pursue – prosecuting and disrupting people engaged in serious and organised criminality. Prevent – preventing people from engaging in serious and organised criminality. Protect – increasing protection against organised crime. Prepare – reducing the impact of serious and organised crime where it takes place. NEROCU comprises specialist teams delivering across intelligence, operations, investigations, cyber, economic, technical and digital capabilities.
The role
Are you ready to dive into the fast‑paced world of cryptocurrency and its growing role in serious and organised crime? This is a unique opportunity to build specialist skills, gain valuable CPD, and deepen your understanding of how crypto is shaping investigations across NEROCU, nationally and internationally.
You’ll be working alongside our experienced Dark Web team, supporting live crypto investigations and expanding your expertise through Chainalysis training and access to advanced analytical tools. From interpreting Crypto SARs to mapping emerging threats, you’ll be at the forefront of digital crime disruption—helping shape future SOC strategies and uncovering new opportunities to reduce harm across the region.
What you’ll do
- Drive data‑led investigations. Plan and conduct data collection and integration to support complex analysis. Use advanced data techniques—including programming—to manage and interpret large datasets, identifying opportunities to disrupt serious and organised crime.
- Collaborate and represent NEROCU. Liaise with internal teams, partner agencies, and external organisations to share intelligence and coordinate analytical products. Represent NEROCU at briefings, conferences, and national working groups, contributing to strategic insights and decision‑making.
- Deliver impactful analysis. Apply recognised analytical techniques to assess intelligence, test hypotheses, and develop inferences that inform tactical and strategic decisions. Your work will directly support operational managers and shape proactive initiatives aligned with the 4P principles.
- Enhance regional threat understanding. Produce analytical products that identify regional, cross‑border, and national SOC threats.
- Support live operations and legal processes. Provide real‑time research during live operations and support national network requirements. Where needed, prepare evidential statements, meet with legal teams, and attend court as a professional witness to present analytical findings.
What you’ll bring
- Proven experience in conducting detailed analysis across varied data sources, with the ability to interpret complex datasets and identify actionable insights.
- Familiarity with analytical tools and techniques, including data extraction and manipulation to meet operational needs.
- Relevant qualification in intelligence analysis (e.g. Level 3 City & Guilds or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of how intelligence and evidence support law enforcement, including knowledge of CPIA, IPA, and the National Intelligence Model.
- Awareness of SOC threats and enablers, particularly in areas such as cryptocurrency and the dark web.
- Skilled in planning and organising data collection to meet analytical objectives, with a problem‑solving mindset.
- Excellent communication skills—able to present findings clearly and influence across all levels.
- Collaborative approach, with experience working across teams, agencies, and external partners.
- Ability to mentor colleagues and support skill development within the team.
