Senior Vice President, Counsel – Markets

We’re seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join our EMEA Legal team as a Senior Vice President - Counsel for our Markets business, with primary coverage for our Liquidity & Financing platform. This is an exciting moment to join us and be part of BNY’s commercial growth. 

The candidate who fills this role will be expected to contribute as part of a larger team and to independently advise the business. Experience in one or more of liquidity, payments, custody, collateral, execution services and securities finance products is essential. Knowledge or interest in AI, digital assets (e.g. cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets), digitised contracts, is helpful. This position will require the individual to draft and negotiate a variety of contracts and other related agreements, supported by the wider Legal team. The successful candidate will also work closely with business colleagues in evaluating and supporting the implementation of new technologies and business strategies.

This role is based in the UK (London or Manchester). 

In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways: 

Act as a trusted advisor using knowledge of BNY's businesses, products, services and/or strategies to articulate and advance legal positions

Demonstrate the ability to handle a broad portfolio of legal issues

Work collaboratively, seeking guidance and input from colleagues throughout the organisation to ensure legal solutions align to business strategies

Partner with colleagues who also serve in an advisory or oversight capacity, such as those in Risk, Compliance, etc

Manage outside counsel, reviewing work for appropriateness, quality and alignment to expectations

Develop a broad understanding of BNY products and services

 

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following: 

A qualified Solicitor or Barrister currently licensed to practice in England & Wales with ideally 3-8 years PQE, with relevant experience gained from a leading law firm or financial institution

Strong product legal/commercial contractual negotiation experience

Experience in one or more of liquidity, payments, custody, collateral, execution services and securities finance products is essential

Knowledge of some or all of the regulation applicable to the above products, including CASS, MIFID and PSD2

Understanding of English law security structures

Strong legal advisory skills and attention to detail 

Strong drafting and negotiating skills 

Able to work under pressure and manage competing priorities

Commercial, practical and flexible attitude

Able to work collaboratively with strong communication skills

Intellectually curious, adaptable, and committed to continuous growth
